The Machame Route is the most popular and most scenic route on Kilimanjaro. Known as the "Whiskey Route" for its demanding nature, it uses the climb-high-sleep-low technique β€” giving your body time to adjust to altitude over several days.

This 9-day package (7 days on the mountain) includes hotel accommodation the night before and after the climb, KINAPA-certified guides, all meals and equipment, supplemental oxygen, and a celebration dinner on descent.

9-Day Itinerary

1

Day 1

Arrival in Moshi

Greeted at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to Weruweru River Lodge or Salinero Kilimanjaro Lodge. Guide briefing and equipment check. Dinner included.

Day 2

Machame Gate (1,817m) β†’ Machame Camp (3,021m)

Trek begins through montane forest and rainforest. Black & White Colobus monkeys overhead. Distance: 10km / Duration: 6–7 hours.

Day 3

Machame Camp (3,021m) β†’ Shira Camp (3,830m)

Steeper gradient along rocky ridge to the Shira Plateau through moorland. Views of Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. Distance: 4.8km / Duration: 5–6 hours.

Day 4

Shira Camp (3,830m) β†’ Barranco Camp (3,972m)

Alpine desert with the iconic 300ft Lava Tower. Hot lunch at Lava Tower (4,250m) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco. Distance: 10km / Duration: 7–8 hours.

Day 5

Barranco Camp (3,972m) β†’ Karanga Valley (3,963m)

Traverse across desolate scree slopes above the vegetation line. The Barranco Wall scramble is memorable and achievable. Distance: 8.5km / Duration: 7–8 hours.

Day 6

Karanga (3,963m) β†’ Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Final camp before summit. Short day β€” rest in the afternoon. Early dinner and sleep by 6pm for midnight summit push. Distance: 3.5km / Duration: 4–5 hours.

Day 7

Barafu β†’ Uhuru Peak (5,895m) β†’ Millennium Camp (3,790m)

Summit push begins at midnight. Stella Point (5,739m) at sunrise. Uhuru Peak by 8am β€” the Roof of Africa. Descend to Millennium Camp. Distance: 13.4km / Duration: 12–15 hours.

Day 8

Millennium Camp (3,790m) β†’ Mweka Gate (1,630m)

Final descent through forest. Certificates presented at Mweka Gate. Celebration dinner back at the lodge. Distance: 12.1km / Duration: 6–7 hours.

Day 9

Departure from Moshi

Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Or continue to a Tanzania safari or Zanzibar extension.
