9 Days Climb Northern Circuit

Highlights

On this Northern Circuit Kilimanjaro climb you will discover one of the world’s 7 summits and explore one of the most amazing mountain in the world, Mt Kilimanjaro. It is also one of the only routes where wildlife can be encountered. Kilimanjaro is an emblematic mountain in Tanzania which stand at an elevation of 5895m (amsl), and it’s the highest mountain in Africa and tallest free Standing Mountain on earth planet.

There are many routes to tackle this breathtaking peak, however, the Northern Circuit Kilimanjaro route has the highest summit success rate. It’s also the longest route which gives enough time for acclimatization. The route approach the mountain from the west and depart from the Londorosi gate. The descent is through the Mweka route and ends at the Mweka gate.

We will set off porters carrying all the mountain gears and food for the trip. Keep in mind that you will need to have a good fitness levels as we enjoy an average of 3-6 hours of trekking every day in different terrains and climatic conditions, of course, our professional guides will be there to help you with every step you take.

If you have the time, we highly suggest this route simply because the route offer high successful rate for a client to make to the roof of Africa (Uhuru peak)

ITINERARY

Day 1, Arrival Moshi town:

Arriving at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), you will be greeted upon arrival by our warm, friendly guide(s). You will be transferred to your hotel. Your guide will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day.

Meals: Dinner Only.

Accommodation: Weruweru River Lodge or Sal Salnero Kilimanjaro Lodge or an alternative accommodation of the same standard

Day 2: Lemosho Glades (2385) to Big Tree Camp (2780m):

After breakfast our driver will take you and your guide(s) to Lemosho gate located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After signing in, you will enter the beautiful and undisturbed rainforest to begin your ascent up the mountain. The route offer good chance to witnessing undisturbed forest by human activities with splendid view of varieties of birds and black and white colobus monkey. The hiking will take 3 to 4 hours to reach Mti Mkubwa Camp as known as Big Tree Camp, the camp name is given to present of large conifer trees that provide shade over the campsite.

Day 3: Big Tree Camp (2780m) to Shira 1 Camp (3500m):

Today you will trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather scattered with volcanic rock formations. Our destination for today is the Shira 1 Camp from where there are often views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds. We gain a reasonable amount of altitude today and parts of the route are fairly steep.

Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp (3500m) to Shira 2 Camp (3900m):

Today you will get the chance to view the Northern Ice fields from the western side of the mountain with some unusual views of Kibo. Our steady climb across the moorland of the Shira Plateau will help with acclimatization and we enjoy great panoramic views. Our destination today is the Shira 2 Camp. In the afternoon you will take an acclimatization walk then head back to camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp (3900m) to Moir Camp (4175m):

Today we have the chance to view the Northern ice fields from the western side of the mountain with some unusual views of Kibo. The terrain during our steady climb will change from the moorland of the Shira Plateau to the broad upland desert beneath the Lent Hills with great panoramic views. Look out for the giant Senecio’s before the high alpine desert zone. Our camp is at Moir Hut (4175m). After a short rest you can go on a recommended afternoon acclimatization walk towards the top of the ridgeline. The ridgeline is in the lower part of the Lent Hills (4300m) – about 2 km away and 130 meters higher than the camp. Dinner will be served on your return to camp.

Day 6: Moir Camp (4175m) to Pofu Camp (4030m):

Today we trek North to Moir Valley – tackle the hardest part of the day at the beginning as you climb a bleak and imposing slope to the summit of Little Lent Hill at 4,375m. Strike eastwards around the Northern Circuit Trail, continuing up and down the undulating valleys on the northern face of Kibo, before finishing your trek day at Pofu Camp. Afternoon Acclimatization Hike recommended.

Day 7: Pofu Camp (4030m) to Third Cave (3900m):

The day starts with a climb up heading east through the remote valleys and around the northern slopes to the Rongai Third Cave at 3,800 meters. The trek is shorter than the day before and vegetation gets increasingly sparse, but by now you should be feeling well acclimatized to the altitude and enjoying the fact there are no steep passages to tackle today. You will arrive at the Third Cave just around mid-afternoon.

Day 8: Third Cave (3900m) to School Hut Camp (4750m):

We begin today with a steady incline up and over the Saddle which sits between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi Peak. Although you should be acclimatizing by now, make sure to drink lots of water and stick to your guide’s slow pace. You could feel the weight of altitude today as you climb steadily higher up Kilimanjaro. Take a few breaks to rest when possible and enjoy stunning views across the saddle to Mawenzi. In preparation for you summit attempt, you will be served an early dinner after arriving at School Hut, before going to bed for an attempt at some shut-eye and rest. Remember to prepare all your gear, including warm clothes, insulated water bottles, snacks and headlamp before going to bed, as you will be awoken before midnight to start your summit attempt.

Day 9: School Hut Camp (4750m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Millennium Camp (3790m):

Today is “The Big Day” – the summit stage. Your guide will wake you around midnight for a hot beverage and snacks before you begin your final ascent which will be long, slow and strenuous ascent. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly but surely goes upwards. At sunrise, you should reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You will have soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a further hike of 1 – 2 hours, you will pass Stella Point (5730m) to reach the highest summit on Kilimanjaro – Uhuru Peak at 5895m.

Witness the awe-inspiring views from the highest point on the African continent, take your pictures to document your achievements and revel in an unforgettable experience. Your descent to Barafu Camp, will be fast and dusty, but a warm meal and short rest awaits you, before proceeding downwards 3-4 hours to Millennium Camp.

Day 10: Millennium Camp (3790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m):

After fantastic breakfast, you will begin the easiest part of your adventure on Mt. Kilimanjaro via a scenic path through the forest to Mweka Gate. The hike is steep in some places and may be slippery if wet so again we recommend that you use trekking poles. Successful hikers who made it to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak will be awarded their certificates at the Mweka gate which is signed by head guide. At the gate you will say goodbye to your mountain crew and enjoy a picnic lunch. The trip leaders will take you back to your hotel for a much welcome hot shower and a celebration dinner.

Day 11, Moshi town/Departure:

For those returning home you will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport to catch your flight. Those continuing on safari or to Zanzibar you will be picked up at your hotel for the continuation of your African tour
