7 - Days Rongai route
Highlights
Climb with us to discover undiscovered beauty of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Rongai route is the less trafficked route compared with other routes which found in the northern part along the border of Tanzania and Kenya. The route ascends Mt. Kilimanjaro from the northeastern of the mountain. Rongai has a relatively gentle gradient and short daily stages as it winds its way from the starting point which makeit to be easiest of all the routes.
ITINERARY
Day 1, Arrival Moshi town:
Arriving at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), you will be greeted upon arrival by our warm, friendly guide(s). You will be transferred to your hotel. Your guide will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day.
Meals: Dinner Only.
Accommodation: Weruweru River Lodge or Sal Salnero Kilimanjaro Lodge or an alternative accommodation of the same standard.
Day 2: Nalemoru Gate (1990m) to Simba Camp (2625m):
After breakfast starts your journey to the roof of Africa by a drive to the basecamp and starting point for treks up the mountain where you will be signing in and meet your team of porters. Then in the afternoon begin your trek on a wide path that winds through pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently, but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife. The first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone with extensive views over the Kenyan plains..

Day 3: Simba Camp (2625m) to 2nd Cave camp (3480m):
The morning hike is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave Camp located in the moorland zone with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim.

Duration: 3 – 4 hours

Accommodation: 2nd Cave Camp
Day 4: 2nd Cave camp (3480m) to Kikelewa Camp (3600m):
Leaving the pine forest behind we carry on with a steady ascent walking though moorland. There are superb views of the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim of Kibo, the highest of the three volcanoes which form the mountain. We will leave the main trail and strike out across moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi, the second of Kilimanjaro’s volcanoes. We will set up camp today in the sheltered valley near Kikelewa caves.

Day 5: Kikelewa Camp (3600m) to Mawenzi Tarn (4310m):
This day is short but steep climb leaves the vegetation zone behind and brings you to Mawenzi Tarn Hut. This location not only allows you to appreciate some thrilling views across to Kibo but also offers a chance to rest and further acclimatize before continuing on to higher points on the mountain..

Duration: 4 – 5 hours

Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn
Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn (4310m) to Kibo Camp (4700m):
Cross the lunar desert of the “saddle” the path found between Mawenzi and Kibo, a favorite part of the mountain for many, to reach Kibo campsite at the bottom of the crater wall. On arriving at camp we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up at between 11pm and 12pm to start the climb to the summit.

Day 7: Kibo Camp (4700m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Horombo Hut (3700m):
Today will be the most physically and emotionally demanding day of the entire trek. Leaving camp at 1:00am, begin trekking the steep scree trail to Gilman’s Point (5685m). Here rest and enjoy the views at the crater rim, soaking in what will be one of the most spectacular sunrises of your life. Begin the ascent to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro. Reaching this point around 8am will give you the most spectacular views, before the clouds set in. After a well-deserved celebration at the top of Africa, descend straight down to Kibo Hut for lunch then on to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Duration: 12 – 15 hours

Day 8, Horombo Hut (3700m) to Marangu gate (1860m):
The last stage passes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m) where a warm lunch is waiting for you. Soon, you will once again pass the tropical rainforest and after a total time of 6 hours trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After saying goodbye to your mountain guides, a short transfer follows to take you back to your hotel in Moshi. Once there, you can take a warm and relaxing shower and celebrate your success in reaching the summit of the Kilimanjaro.

Duration: 7 – 8 hours

Day 9, Departure:
Continue to discover the beauty of Africa by heading on to safari or off to Zanzibar and for those who fly back home we transfer you to the airport for your international departure.
