6 Day Marangu Route

Highlights

Marangu is the route to the roof of Africa, famously known as the “Coca Cola Route”, Marangu route is the easiest, cheapest and one of the busiest routes to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offer sleeping huts in dormitory-style accommodation.

Climbs can take five or six days; however, we always advise choosing the longer route for the best chance of acclimatization and reaching the summit.

ITINERARY

Day 1, Arrival Moshi town:

Arriving at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), you will be greeted upon arrival by our warm, friendly guide(s). You will be transferred to your hotel. Your guide will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day.

Meals: Dinner Only.

Accommodation: Weruweru River Lodge or Sal Salnero Kilimanjaro Lodge or an alternative accommodation of the same standard

Day 2, Marangu Gate (1860m) to Mandara Hut (2700m):

After breakfast our driver will take you and your guide(s) to Marangu gate ready to begin your trek. Once the necessary paper work has been completed, your trek can begin and you will soon be hiking through the dense rainforest. Alongside the impressive vegetation, you will have the chance to catch a glimpse of some primates as you head to the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, your guide can take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Kenyan interior.

Duration: 5 – 6 hours

Day 3, Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3700m):

After breakfast leave the glades of forest and follow an ascending path up the Moorland to Horombo hut. Approximately 4 – 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3700m. From the hut, you will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo and the wide plain of the Masai steppe.

Day 4, Acclimatization trek to Zebra rocks (4020m) and back to Horombo Hut (3700m):

Leaving the pine forest behind we carry on Today serves as an acclimatization day. This should not be underestimated and greatly improves your chance of success in reaching the summit. After a relaxing breakfast, a 4-hour trek follows to the Zebra Rocks. The distinctive black and white stripes give the rock formation its name. On your return to Horombo Hut, a warm lunch will be waiting for you. You can relax in the afternoon and regain your strength for the hike the following day.

Day 5, Horombo Hut (3700m) to Kibo Hut (4700m):

Ascending we pass the “Last Water Point” walking on the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi arriving at Kibo Hut. On the way, you are free to take some photos of any interesting features or with your professional guides for future remembrance.

Distance: 9.5km / 5.9mi

Duration: 7 – 8 hours

Day 6: Kibo Hut (4700m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Horombo Hut (3700m):

A long, hard day! Leaving at midnight (00:00hrs) for the summit on steep and heavy scree up to Gilman’s Point at 5685m/18,466’. Before reaching Gilman’s point you will see Hans Meyer’s curve rest for few minutes and take some photos. Also at Gilman’s point you will take a rest and enjoy the view sat the crater rim before ascending up to Uhuru Peak. You will reach Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro at 19,340 feet, around 7 a.m. At this early hour, before the clouds close in, we have spectacular views of Africa in all directions. Then take some photos like the sunrise view.

From here you descend going straight down to Kibo Hut for lunch and then on to Horombo Hut for overnight. It is a long descent and trekking poles are recommended. Then we say congratulations, you have made it to the Roof of Africa!

Day 7, Moshi:

The last stage passes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m) where a warm lunch is waiting for you. Soon, you will once again pass the tropical rainforest and after a total time of 6 hours trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After saying goodbye to your mountain guides, a short transfer follows to take you back to your hotel in Moshi. Once there, you can take a warm and relaxing shower and celebrate your success in reaching the summit of the Kilimanjaro.

Duration: 7 – 8 hours

Day 8, Moshi town/Departure:

For those returning home you will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport to catch your flight. Those continuing on safari or to Zanzibar you will be picked up at your hotel for the continuation of your African tour.
